Curiosity went to Mars and all it got was this high-res image of a penny

NASA’s Curiosity rover has been amazingly roving around Mars for a while now, progressively placing and prodding the Martian place, shifting pictures across place so we earthbound individuals can encounter what it’s like simply walking around an different globe. The pictures are not of a low high top quality either, as Curiosity has some stylish cameras on panel. The most newest top high top quality image we Earthlings have acquired from the Martian landscapes is not of a Martian, but of an America penny.

Donning a touristy “I went to Mars and all I got was this image of a penny” t-shirt, Curiosity used its Mars Side Lens Imager (MAHLI) to take the taken of the penny. The cash is not just any old penny, at least, as it’s a 1909 Champion Bob Brenner penny, unique for being printed in Chi town as the first Lincoln consequently subsequently penny, but also because the designer’s name “VDB” were recognizable on the first editions of the cash. As you can see from the above image, the name were soon removed (here is a better high top quality shot).

Curiosity presented the penny to Mars as a calibration system, so the MAHLI could just click pictures of the penny to get prepared for getting pictures the Martin environment.

The image of the penny is the greatest high top quality image the MAHLI can capture, at 14 micrometers per pixel — the last highest-res pictures were of Martina rocks, at 16 and 17 micrometers per pixel. This is important not because we now have proof that World currency trading has handled place, but because it’s originally MAHLI has been able to take an image at its highest possible high top quality. The process was acquired because this is originally Curiosity’s automated arm was able to put MAHLI up near enough to products.

Though MAHLI’s penny image is top high top quality, it’s not the highest-res image taken on Mars, as the Phoenix Mars Lander preserves that history thanks to the help of a moment lense. However, that does not quite rely as affordable, and at least MAHLI pictures images of factors in their organic developing, rather than on a moment stage.
